Region Day Event

Presenter:
Annette Becker is an arts educator and material culture historian whose research focuses on dress history. She serves as the Director of the Texas Fashion Collection (TFC), an archive of nearly 20,000 garments and accessories housed within the University of North Texas’ College of Visual Arts and Design. Established in 1938 by the Dallas-based department store Neiman Marcus, today the TFC serves as a bridge between popular and academic understandings of fashion. The Collection is activated through educational programming and curatorial projects, which benefit researchers, creators, and a wide range of community members.
Description:
Goldwork, beading, and embroidery are practiced by makers today, drawing on long historical traditions that inform their materials, techniques, and cultural meanings. By exploring those histories, we can develop deeper understandings of the importance of these practices and the creative possibilities they hold. Grounded in the world-class holdings of the Texas Fashion Collection at the University of North Texas, this lecture will feature detailed photographs of historic artifacts and documents from the past to illustrate the deeply human stories that continue to shape handwork practices today. For more information about the Texas Fashion Collection go to https://tfc.cvad.unt.edu/about/fashion-archives.html.
