Class 201: Quiet Frost
Teacher: Kathy Rees
Technique: Canvas work and beading
Design area: 4x12
Proficiency level: Intermediate
Pre-work: None
Kit cost: $115.00
Snow has fallen soundlessly in the dark of night and we wake up to a quiet frost. Layers of threads and stitches make up the areas above and below the center ribbon of snowflakes and icicles created with beaded embroidery. Icy colors of silks and metallic threads in a variety of textures are combined to create a winter wonderland. Students will be given instructions to reproduce the original beaded design area but also will be encouraged to put their own spin on it.

Class 202: Larry the Patchwork Lion
Teacher: Toni Gerdes
Larry is a ferocious Patchwork Lion that explores many different stitches to create a happy addition to your needlework decorations. He is the third in a series of Patchwork animals; the first was Elliot the Patchwork Elephant followed by Gertrude the Patchwork Giraffe. The autumnal feel of the colors make stitching on this canvas a dream. The optional addition of a fun gold beaded crown and whiskers makes Larry the definite “King of the Jungle.” Several Rainbow Gallery metallic threads, Vineyard Silk, Treenway Silk Eyelash, and Planet Earth Silks, along with beads and sequins will be used to create this charismatic design. The stitches will include old favorites, as well as a few surprises. The background will be a white on white diagonal pattern that emphasizes the corners of the design and enhance the lion’s strong personality.

Proficiency level: Advanced Intermediate/Advanced (Experience with surface embroidery required.
Student should know back stitch, blanket stitch, and split stitch as these will not be demonstrated.)
Pre-work: approx. 3 hours
Kit cost: $80.00
One of Celeste’s favorite things to do is walk along the beach picking up seashells. As the waves gently roll in, she searches the sandy beach to see what treasure she might discover. Each shell is a mystery, a question of what sea creature once inhabited it. In this class, you will create your own tidal treasures: a starfish needle minder, a sea urchin pin cushion, and scallop needle book. In the 17th century, variations of the detached buttonhole stitch were used extensively to create many of the flora and fauna motifs found on caskets and mirrors of that period. You will learn some of these same needle lace variations to create the textures found on seashells.
