REGION DAY

“Silk for Stitching” Michele Roberts Lecture
Wednesday, June 14, 2006
1:00 to 3:30 p.m.
Cost: $5.00 per person

Please join us as Michele Roberts, talented needlework designer, teacher and historian, presents a wonderful slide lecture on everyone’s favorite fiber – silk! Luxurious silk has been the “Queen of Textiles” since its discovery by the Empress Hsi Ling in 2640 B.C. No other fiber, thread, or fabric can match it.

Through a lecture and a slide presentation the world of silk for stitching will be explored. More than one hundred slides are in the lecture. They include sericulture in Asia and Europe, and the history of silk embroidery from ancient times in Asia; through the Middle Ages and the Renaissance in Europe; and the present day throughout the world.

The extensive exhibits for this presentation range from real silkworm cocoons to antique shuttles, pirns and cards from a Jacquard loom. Dozens of types of silk will be displayed and discussed.
