Have you ever wanted to use your favorite photographs and
simple transfer methods to create backgrounds for needlepoint
or embroidery?  This class will give you the chance to explore that technique. The teacher will provide photographs of the garden to be applied to canvas. Students will develop additional
elements for the backgrounds, using transfer paints, nets, painted transfer web and other layering techniques. Canvases will then be stitched, interpreting the canvas with emphasis on proper
threads and needle sizes. In addition, a student choice photo will be printed for class design play.

Kit includes: two computer printed fabric pictures (students sends one photo to teacher for printing before class); cotton/polyester white fabrics; white linen; Congress cloth; nets, sheers
and Wonder Under™; “Photo-trans”ferred paper with design; over dyed cottons in garden colors; transfer paint inks; needles; instructions with color photo.

302 DESIGN & COLOR FOR NEEDLEWORK

Have you ever wanted to take a design class but were afraid to do so? Then this is your class! Whether or not you ever want to design your own pieces, you should know what constitutes a good design.  Elements such as line, shape, direction, size, color, value and texture are used in accordance with principles such as repetition, alternation,
harmony, gradation, dominance and balance. We start at the very beginning and will not leave you behind! You won’t fall asleep, no one will read out loud to you, you will end up with an invaluable finished reference notebook, and best of all, you will be able to use everything you learn to improve and enhance your personal stitching, whatever your chosen technique.

Kit includes: extensive booklet printed on cardstock; gray scales; Color Aid papers; black and white design papers; color scans of stitched samples; special cover and divider pages; access to copier brought by teacher; access to shared materials including fabric, colored papers, tissue, art film, art magazines, paints, cardstock, and design example templates.

Student provides: box of 100 page protectors; 3” binder; colored pencils or markers; glue sticks; paper cutting scissors; black pens in various widths, and pencil. Optional: magazines/catalogs to share, and fabric, yarn, and thread scraps to share. No prework required.

“Spring Symphony” is an elegant way to hold your scissors,
needles, thimble and threads. It is composed of three panels of Casalguidi style embroidery linked by insertion stitches.  Casalguidi embroidery is rich in texture and dimension. This piece incorporates raised padded stitches, needle lace, bullion
knots and four sided stitches as well as wrapped and couched threads to create a piece of embroidery with a fascinating sculptural look. “Spring Symphony” is lined with Ultra Suede™ and closed with a Casalguidi style tassel button. And, just for fun,
you can make a Casalguidi tassel scissor fob to complete the set!

“Peaceful Interlude” will expand the canvas worker’s horizons using threads, silk ribbons, Wonder Under™, Solvy™ (water-soluble fabric) and sheer fabrics to create leaves, stems, flowers and grasses using combinations of materials, stitches and techniques. Emphasis is on creating cast shadows for perspective and depth. Stitches and techniques include Japanese leaf, hollyhock stitch, outline, puffed straight stitch, French knots, buttonhole-on-a-bar, lazy daisies, whipped backstitch, couching, chain, Cretan stitch, and working with sheer fabrics and novelty threads.

Four techniques and projects will be taught in “Beading 101.”  The projects are a 2” x 3” pin, a 2” x 3” amulet bag, an 8” bracelet, and a 1” x 16” necklace. “Beading 101” is designed to give students with all levels of beading experience—from novice to experienced—solid grounding in four basic beading techniques. These are brick, peyote, square and herringbone. You will learn to begin and end each stitch, as well as increasing and decreasing. You will make samples for each technique to aid in future beading projects. A beading glossary will be provided, as well as finishing instructions for each project.

A variety of color schemes will be offered—due to availability of supplies, accent beads may vary.

Kit includes: #11 Delica beads; #11 seed beads; accent beads; Nymo™ beading thread; beading needles; findings to finish projects, and workbook including complete instructions for finishing.

Student provides: beading pad or dish; fabric scissors; pencil or pen for note taking; light and magnification if needed, and usual stitching supplies/tools. Students are invited to bring beads and buttons they may want to feature in these projects. No prework required.

306 TALL OAKS SAMPLER

The “Tall Oaks Sampler” is a vibrant colored sampler that may be diminutive in size but is filled with many intricate embroidery techniques to more than challenge the sampler enthusiast. The verse at the top - “Tall oaks from little acorns grow” - is rendered in Latin and translated to English at the bottom. Twenty-six different stitches are used to enhance the traditional sampler motifs. Freeform stump work, black work, and cutwork bands (including Dove’s eye, needle weaving and attachment of seed beads to make a unique way of working withdrawn thread) are methods included in this sampler. Class time will be devoted to learning the different stitches and stump work elements. Different stitching methods will be discussed.

Kit includes: 29-count Ivory Glenshee linen; Soie D’Alger silk threads; fabric; needle; instructions, and photograph.

There are many messages in this project. One is that of color, and how the background canvas color changes the chosen threads and their effect. The second is that of balance and the use of negative space. The third is that of texture and surprise materials that are normally not used for canvas embroidery. “Addictions V” includes 14 new composite patterns that use silks, cottons, metallics, beads, and new concepts using textured knitting and weaving threads, decorator fabric manipulations, and other glitter surprises! You will truly become addicted!

The iris has been a powerful design motif since Biblical times. In heraldry, the fleur de lys is modeled from the iris. Though there are many variations and colors in Genus Iridaceae, the common purple bearded iris is generally accepted as the standard.

A life-size, realistic three-dimensional stump work iris done in lace, is centered in an elaborate Renaissance-styled needlepoint, silk ribbon, and bullion frame on this formal piece. Techniques include invisible attachment of gold bullion, lace making on handheld muslin lace makers’ pad, needlepoint stitches, and silk ribbon stitches.

Kit includes: 18 count Zweigart™ woven iridescent canvas; Gloriana over dyed silks; Au Ver Au Soie fine silk twist; DMC cotton floss; Kreinik metallic braids; English gold and colored bullion; needles; lace makers’ pad; wires, couching threads; beeswax; booklet; photograph, and other items.

Angie loves to make samplers. One of her samplers hangs on the wall behind her right shoulder, and she is holding two more. Please note that Angie is devoted to canvas work; her samplers, as well as her dress, reflect her love of traditional needlepoint patterns. Byzantine, waffle, mosaic, Scotch, Gobelin, brick and tent are but a few of Angie’s favorite stitches. Angie likes to work in a variety of threads and she usually keeps Kreinik braid, Impressions, Soie d’Alger, Thread Gatherer over dyed silk, Needle Necessities over dyed floss, floss, and perle cotton in her stitching basket.

“Celestial Dimension” is a creative adaptation stitched on three separate pieces of Congress cloth that are then layered to create a fabulous, dramatic presentation. The centerpiece of the design features the faces of the sun and the moon, which are then layered on a composition of triangular geometric patterns. The third, or background layer, consists of a series of border patterns. Color and pattern repetition across the three layers yields a complex and unified design with dramatic impact.

Create a charming winter sampler in the guise of a 16” teddy bear. Composed of 22 separate pieces of Congress cloth, each bear will be entirely different. Choosing from a wide variety of winter and holiday line drawings, students spend 3 1/2 days designing and stitching, choosing threads, patterns and designs to make each teddy a one of a kind masterpiece. Students must be able to read and compensate graphs and visualize in three dimensions.

“An Evening at the Ritz” is a roomy evening purse (or framed piece, small pillow or pillow insert) that aptly fits the definition “epitome of elegance.” Worked on 18 count black canvas, the purse flap is composed of several ribbon-type bands stitched in gold, copper, rust and black. Many of the bands contain intricate multi-step stitch combinations. One emphasis of this class is the manipulation and versatility of metallic threads. Methods of adapting a design from another source to a piece of needlework will be discussed and demonstrated.

“Persian Fantasy” explores historical techniques of Western and Oriental silk and metal embroidery, in addition to Florentine work and some traditional canvas stitches. The geometric design of octagons and squares, an adaptation from a piece of Oriental fabric, is executed on 18 count eggshell canvas in two color families of silk plus metal threads. The student will have silk color choices. Some of the techniques used are: laid work/trellis fillings; burden stitch; pattern couching; padding; canvas composite variations, and couching.

Kit includes: shipping for prework; all materials required to complete the project; detailed instruction booklet.

Student provides: 15” x 15” stretcher bars; tacks; frame or frame weights; laying tool; light/magnification if needed, and the usual stitching supplies. A minimum of 5 hours prework will be required.
