202 THREE SUMMER THISTLES
KATHY FENCHEL
Stump Work/Needlepoint (Intermediate)
Design Size: 5” x 5”
Kit Cost: $45
Class is closed.
The focal point of “Three Summer
Thistles” is the silk stump work thistles. Both flowers and stems are
stitched in traditional stump work techniques. The leaves are standard
needlepoint stitches. A whimsical three dimensional dragonfly hovers
over the flowers. Crawling up the inside of the circle is a tiny
inchworm stitched in Casalguidi stitch. The 3-inch circle that surrounds
the center motif is simple surface stitching. The background is a laid
needlepoint trellis variation. A layered herringbone stitch using four
different sized threads has created the border.
Kit includes: Line drawn ecru Congress
cloth; over dyed silk; Kreinik metallic; floss; perle cotton; fabric;
wire; beads, needles, booklet with color photos, diagram and charts.
Student provides: 9”x 9” stretcher bars;
tacks or stapler; frame or frame weights; 3” embroidery hoop, and
regular stitching supplies. No prework required. |

203 BERLIN THE CAT
DAKOTA ROGERS

will be “lifting the lid from the box” and exploring possibilities.
Although the stitches are covered in class, students are encouraged to
use creativity when placing them. No two cats will be exactly the same
as the one pictured.

CAROLYN SHERMAN
Beading (Basic to Intermediate)

Learn the very basics of the Ndebele

Delica beads for the sides of a 2 1/2” box. The landscape is embellished
with tiny wildflowers using several techniques. The lid depicts the
desert with sand and a flowering yucca plant in peyote stitch.
Hummingbird and ladybug beads add a finishing touch. The lid band is a
cactus scene worked in brick stitch. A quick and easy box lining will be

some exciting new beading techniques.

fabric; felt; needles; threads; instructions, and complete graphs.

205 FLIGHT FROM SUZHOU
KAY STANIS
Silk Embroidery on Sheer Fabric (Intermediate)
Design Size: 5” x 7”
Kit Cost: $42 (includes frame)
With the lovely embroideries of China as
our guide, we will pursue the art of working gossamer flights of
butterflies on silk organza. Travel through slides to the Suzhou
Embroidery Research Institute to see the secluded gardens and workshop
rooms. Learn from actual samples of fabrics, threads and embroideries
produced and collected in Suzhou. Samples of other Chinese embroideries
will be available for discussion and students are encouraged to bring
their own Chinese embroidery treasures to share with the class. We will
explore the world of Chinese symbolism and stitch a flight of
butterflies in stranded silk. Shading will be the key to embroidering
them and there will be an opportunity to study double sided work.
Students will be encouraged to use their own ideas for some color and
stitch interpretations.
Kit includes: silk organza fabric; 30
skeins Eterna silk; stretcher bars; tacks; lacing thread; needles; color
copy, and instruction booklet. Student provides: frame or frame weight;
