101 IMAGES OF INDIA
TERRY DRYDEN

“Images of India” was inspired by the intricate and ornate patterns found in Indian textiles. Beginning with a small palette of stitches, you will expand the use of each of these by altering each stitch’s size, scale, color and texture to create a striking and wonderfully textured piece - suitable for framing, a tasseled pillow, or serving tray insert.

Kit includes: 18 count canvas (sandstone color); Watercolours (Pussywillow and Pearl colors); Kreinik metallic; Fabulous Fibers wool; Shimmer; Neon Rays; Patina; Spring II; Needle Necessities Over dyed Floss; and J.L. Walsh, Cascade House and Gumnut silks. Colors: delicate pinks, greens, blues and cream on sandstone canvas. No color choice is offered.

Student provides: 14” x 17” stretcher bars; tacks or stapler; frame or frame weights; laying tool of choice; #20 and #22 tapestry needles; #2H pencil; kneaded eraser; light if desired; usual stitching supplies. No prework required.

102 GRASSHOPPER’S GARDEN

Stump Work on Congress Cloth (Intermediate)

A sassy grasshopper is hiding below three bold flowers which pop out at the viewer. The flowers are bright and flashy, constructed from beads, felt, floss and plastic washers. The hopper’s body is padded and stitched in a raised stem stitch. Portions of his legs are stitched above the canvas. The border is a composite stitch, and the background is a subtle laid stitch. Multiple embroidery, stump work and needlepoint techniques are used in this piece. It is designed to fit a box top but can also be used as a pillow insert or framed.

Kit includes: Line-drawn ecru Congress cloth; padding; hardware items; bead assortment; Anchor floss; Kreinik metallic; needles; instruction booklet with color charts, photos and diagrams.

Student provides: 9”x 9” stretcher bars; staples or tacks; frame or frame weight; light and magnification if needed, and usual stitching supplies. No prework required.

103 BUSY BEE
DAKOTA ROGERS
Black Work on Linen Banding (Basic)

Hang this Stitching Necessity over the arm of your chair, over your knee, or keep it in your stitching basket. Embellished with basic black work running patterns on 28 count white linen, it will become a stitching “must have.” This piece is stitched in silk floss. One end of the necessity is designed to hold scissors and a laying tool. The other end is a pocket for other necessities. In the middle is a pin cushion. A needle book, which you will also stitch, is attached. This class includes everything you will need to stitch and complete your necessity and needle book, as well as detailed instructions.

Kit includes: 28 count white linen banding; silk flosses; wool roving; button; cardboard, and instructions.

Student provides: light and magnification if needed, and the usual stitching supplies. No prework required.

104 HEARTS AND TULIPS
CAROLYN SHERMAN
Beading on Paper Mache’ (Intermediate)

Explore four beading techniques and cover a heart-shaped paper mache’ box with beautiful beadwork. The sides are bands of square stitch worked from a graph. The top has two sculpted tulips in tiny seed beads in circular herringbone (Ndebele) stitch. The rippling tulip leaves are seed and Delica beads in a decreasing peyote stitch. A band of flat herringbone resembling a woven ribbon encircles the edge of the lid. A cluster of pink heart beads completes the embellishment of the box lid.

Kit includes: box; seed, Delica and heart beads; felt; needles; thread; glue, and booklet with complete graph and finishing instructions.

Student provides: small embroidery scissors; paper scissors; beeswax; pencil; large black permanent market; placemat of felt or velour; light and magnification, and usual stitching supplies. No prework required.

105 ELIZABETHAN ELEGANCE

Silk/Metal Embroidery on Velvet (Basic/Intermediate)

The traditions and interpretations of 16th century designs, blended with 21st century silk and metal, create an exquisite floral. Padding in card, felt and string under silk and gold work techniques will create dimensional effects. Students will be encouraged to use their own ideas in color and stitch interpretations.

Kit includes: black velvet (student can substitute own in different color); silk, couching thread; gold (crinkle, check purls, Jaceron, paillettes); felt; waxed string; transfer paper; photo, and instruction booklet.

Student provides: stretcher bars 16” x 9”; linen fabric 16” x 8”; needles (#22 chenille, #10 crewel, #15 beading); beeswax; pencil; yellow/gold mailing envelope; 2 pairs scissors (1 for cutting metal and 1 for silk); laying tool (tekobari recommended; frame or frame weights; needle threaders; bead tray (instructions for making included in student letter); thimble if needed; light and magnification if needed, and usual stitching supplies. Small tweezers and set of frame magnets is also recommended. No prework required.

106 BUTTERFLY STITCHES

The front of this charming butterfly-shaped needle case is cross stitched with the student’s choice of designs—adapted from samplers, a band sampler, a blue butterfly or a realistic butterfly. The back is personalized with name and date. The wings are tied with silk ribbons that, when undone, let the wings unfold to reveal a place to put needles. The butterfly itself is a pin cushion. A matching scissors fob on a twisted cord will complete the sewing kit. Everything goes into a calico bag. Class time will include finishing one side of the needle case, and a discussion and demonstration of finishing techniques for small needlework ornaments.

Kit includes: 32 count linen; floss; batting; ribbon; pins; charts and directions; poster board; calico (choice of fabric in class); calico lining; muslin; perle cotton, and needles.

Student provides: stretcher bars and tacks if desired; paper scissors; glue stick; light/magnification if needed, and the usual stitching supplies for this type of work. Some prework is required.
