A Sixteenth Century Needlewoman: Mary Queen of Scots
CAROLE LAKE
MULTI-MEDIA LECTURE/CANVAS
Proficiency Level: Advanced Intermediate to Advanced
Design Size: 12” X 12”
The life and needlework of Marie Stuart, popularly known as Mary Queen of
Scots, are the backbone of this history class. A multi-media presentation
complements a stitched piece on canvas based on her own needlework. By doing
a small amount of advance reading, students will already have a basic
understanding of Mary’s life and world before coming to class.
This class will study the life, art and influences of the sixteenth century
as evoked by one of history’s most famous needlewomen. Mary herself worked
primarily in tent stitch with professional embroiderers to assist. In this
class we will not only consider her techniques, but also how she might have
interpreted her 16th century designs with access to today’s materials and
knowledge. Drawings used by Mary to develop her own stitching are combined
for this class using modern stitches and contemporary threads.
The core of the class will be the symbols Mary used in her needlework as
messages. Elizabethan emblems and symbols are fascinatingly obtuse to the
modern eye. This class explores that world. The class project contains the
symbols most important to Mary: her cipher, the thistle of Scotland, the
Tudor rose and the lily of France, and, of course, the crown over all,
claiming her right to be Queen of each of the three countries.
Materials in Kit:
Kit includes pre-basted 18ct. dark green canvas, all threads needed to
complete the piece, needles, full size color picture, notebook pages and
bibliography. No pre-stitching, but some suggested (but not required)
reading.
Kit Fee: $88.00 |
